Whenever they hit the poker table for the first time, rookies are tempted to believe there is no need for any sort of strategy here.

As soon as they learn the rule, they realize this is a very simple and straightforward game, in which luck has an awfully heavy word to say, so they figure strategy is not for them.

Those who get hit by the beginner’s lucky streak might even throw all theories out the window, that is until they get a herd-reality check.

Poker is indeed an apparently simple game, at a closer look however, you’ll discover intricacies you’d never have thought were there.

The very first thing that becomes obvious form a rookie’s point of view in an online poker game, as far as strategy is concerned, is starting hand selection. Everyone picks up on the fact that not all poker hands are created equal indeed, and there is some sort of a need for starting hand selection.

Where most of them go wrong though, is how they use starting hand selection. There are all sort of charts out there meant to help beginners, and even though their authors meant well, many times these starting hand charts end up doing more harm than good.

Rookies usually do not bother understanding why the chart says this hand is better than the other, under the given circumstances, and they couldn’t care less how they should play the given hand. Following the chart blindly – they figure  - will provide them an edge already.

When it comes to poker, do not get cocky even if you get hit by an initial lucky run. Online poker is beaten in the long-run. Short term variation means nothing whatsoever. In order to beat it in the long-run however, you need to settle down and learn some serious poker strategy.
