Baccarat

Baccarat is a gambling card-game one can find in most live and online casinos. The interesting thing about this game is that its name is derived from the worst possible hand, which is the equivalent of “0” and is also called baccarat.

There are several versions to the game: punto banco baccarat, played mostly in North America, is all about luck. Players don’t really have any strategic options available, their moves being directed and forced by what they’re dealt.

Baccarat Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque (the other two variants) do allow for choices, thus they’re based on skill rather than luck.

There are three possible outcomes in Baccarat, “banker”, “player” and “tie”.

None of these actually designate the player or the house in particular, they’re just entities on which the player can wager.

In Punto Banco Baccarat (the version played in Australia, Canada, Sweden and the US) the casino is always the banker. Players however, can just as well bet on the banker as on the player in this variant too.

Two hands of two cards each are dealt, first card goes to the player second one to the banker, third to the player again and the fourth to the banker. Following the opening deal, both hands (belonging to the player and the banker respectively) are turned over, and the dealer reads out the value of each hand.

In Baccarat, you have to know that cards from 2-9 possess their nominal value, those from 10-K are worth “0” and the Ace is worth one. The best possible Baccarat score is “9” because whenever the resulting value of a hand is over 10, a digit will simply be dropped from it.

13 will be worth 3, 11 will be worth 1, and so on. Again, the worst possible hand is “0” and it’s called Baccarat.

From here on, play is determined by an intricate “tableau” which tells each of the parties what to do according to a set of baccarat rules.
